The Benefits of Dance

August 15, 2019

Many parents are surprised to know that dance classes can create a strong foundation for the rest of their kids’ lives. If you are a parent, and are considering enrolling your child into dance classes this fall, read below the emotional and physical benefits that dance classes can provide!

Dance Enhances Physical Development

Components of Fitness

Dance at any age involves physical skills like coordination, strength, and flexibility. These skills become second nature to a dancer over the years. Developing these skills are essential to possess in other sports and activities. Unlike other sports, dance targets all muscle groups and promotes an increased range of motion. This exercise helps to prevent conditions that are associated with sedentary lifestyles.

Cognitive Development

Dancers will learn and be asked to remember choreography over certain amounts of time, which helps to develop their kinesthetic memory, as well as mental concentration. They develop strong muscle memory to be able to remember class choreography week after week.

Dance Strengthens Social Interaction

Verbal and Nonverbal Expression

In dance class, youth learn valuable communication skills, including how to express themselves verbally and nonverbally through movement. At Encore Dance, we encourage self-expression and using movement as a tool to express emotions when dancing.

Importance of Teamwork

While dance classes focus on individual growth and success, we also integrate team dynamics and encourage our students to work together as a whole. Cheering on one another and applauding other’s strengths are considered classroom etiquette. Not to mention, students develop lifelong friendships in class that are based on trust and openness.

Listening Skills

Dance classes are very different from classes in a school setting. Students are able to learn and grow from doing and practicing, as opposed to learning from a textbook or a lecture. This helps dancers develop different listening skills and improve their attention span.

Dance Improves Mental Well-Being

Endorphins!

After exercising, endorphins are released, triggering positive feelings that help to eliminate stress and elevate mood.

Self-Confidence

Taking dance classes from a young age helps to increase self-awareness and emotional maturity of students. Not to mention, the self-confidence students project is helpful beyond the classroom. Students also get to practice dedication and setting goals for themselves without even realizing it!

Healthy Time Investment

Getting kids away from the technology and encouraging movement is not only physically beneficial, but has such a positive impact on mental well-being. Not to mention, the less time kids have getting into mischief, and more time they have to make and accomplish goals.

Not only are these benefits valuable to dancers themselves, but also to you as a parent! At Encore, our classes will help to reinforce these traits in your child to help them grow as a person and a dancer. We cannot wait to see you in the fall!
